Growing up in Kampala, he watched his grandmother as she sewed colorful dresses for the women in her life. By watching her, he always knew that he would be a designer and sew clothes. His dream did not come to realization until, one day; he made a dress for a girl. Her friends became almost obsessed with that dress.
Joe Lalaika, subsequently, started receiving requests from girls to make dresses for them. His passion as a designer had taken him to Thailand, and Bangladesh, where he made connections with manufacturers. Through fashion shows at Hilton and the Liberty hotel, Joe Malaika collaborated with national brand such as banana republic, Zara, and Sephora. He actively raised money for Jimmy Fund. His goal is to see Joe Malaika brand at the national stores such as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus
I am local Boston designer, I have studied abroad in London, Paris and graduated in my home town. Received the Best of Show Award, Costume Design Award, Creativity in Fashion Design Award, The Fashion Group International of Boston Scholarship Award, Portfolio Scholarship and on the Dean's list.
During the time of my Internship at the Boston Ballet, I became a widow and was left to raise my son on my own. He is now a college graduate and one of my greatest supporter to go after my dream. While in school my son carried my racks of clothing and took countless pictures of my designs .
In the past, I helped local charities with Fashion Shows and by auctioning my designs. Examples as follow: Make a Wish, MADD Mother's against Drunk Driving, Lupus Research, Woman against Domestic Violence, Quincy Hospital, Japan Relief, School of Fashion Design Scholarship and so on. Designer and stylist to countless editorial photo shoots. Designed clothing for local and mainstream music artists, pageant winners and competitors. Worked with the Asian Associations in Boston, Quincy and New York. While keeping my one on one clients in couture gowns for their special events.
Looking forward again to take part in Catwalk for the Cure.
In the future, I would like to raise money for a scholarship to be given to single or widow mother's to study Fashion Design.
